Snowflake Challenge #5
Hello, hello! It's time for Snowflake Challenge #5. The fifth challenge is:
Whether it is to fix-it, honor it, or expand upon it, canon is why we are all here. So, let's celebrate canon today and talk about our favorites. Nostalgic, new, problematic, or forever canons are all welcome to be loved, dissected, and discussed. Have a favorite scene? A much-loved character? A much-maligned character? Just love the whole thing epically? Talk about it all or as little as you want!
In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love.
Hm, if I had to promote a canon, I'd promote Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It is, in my opinion, the perfect companion piece to The Next Generation - showing the smaller scale, darker side of the galaxy. Characters have to make serious decisions and compromises; the Federation is in turmoil over whether it can survive while living up to its founding ideals. It's a great way to reexamine the Trek universe. That's not to say that it's all dark, all the time or that it doesn't have goofier, light hearted moments (and you know I love goof). But when one of the central storylines is the integration of Bajor into the Federation - a planet and people who were brutally exploited, enslaved, and brutalized by a xenophobic, militarist, and facist empire - there's room for darker discussions and plots built in.
