One of my students offered me blood

cornerofmadness: (King)
[personal profile] cornerofmadness
In learning that I'm severely anemic and might need a transfusion (we were talking about hepatitis C and transfusions in micro) he offered me a pint of his blood if we were a match (we are) Hopefully I can avoid the transfusion but that was touching and I appreciate it and I wish all of us could have empathy like that.

I forgot to say yesterday that I was very sad to see Pope Francis passing. I grew up Catholic. He was the first Pope I actually liked. I thought he was a very good man. But since I waited a day I can add how much of a shit stain Marjorie Taylor Greene is as she's been vocally celebrating an 'evil man's' passing. People like her make me hope there IS an afterlife... I just hope that the church doesn't swing back ultraconservative again. Regardless, RIP Pope Francis, we're poorer for your loss.

Rocket is home. He looks good except his face is swollen. I think they were pulling a lot of ticks off him (so much for that 30$ tick medicine) He's already insisting on going out so good wishes for him everyone.

So fannish 50 I had something else in mind, can't remember what it is and now I'm doing this because I had planned to do this last week and forgot. Every so often I like to share the newish stuff I find on YouTube in way of fan creations. look at some of this cool stuff. Fandom is really embracing the music and animation side of things. Prior to this all we had was AMVs (which are lovely too) but I haven't see this level of music since the filk music from the 80s.

I'm in love with this and jealous too but then again I'm not an artist so no one is going to dub my art but I love it.

Axel is a fan voice actor known for doing Arackniss and someone did some more music for him.

Oh geez has a lot of music

And it's a part of this, over an hour of fan music for The Owl House

I might have shared this before but this Gravity Falls/Hazbin Hotel mash up is delightful

And I'm pretty sure this was shared but it popped back up and I love it.

And finally our work in [personal profile] mashfanficchick's mother's house is completed!

I got up at 11:00, had coffee, showered and dressed. [personal profile] mashfanficchick's friend Liz G came at 12:00 and we met her at the house, and took two trips to the storage unit, bringing the last boxes over.

Then we had lunch at a Chinese restaurant, which was delicious.

Finally, Liz G drove a few things from the house to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's apartment, and the very last thing of all, [personal profile] mashfanficchick and I walked a folding table that wouldn't fit in the car from the house to the apartment. And that was that.

I stayed awhile longer, to hang and relax, and then I Ubered home.

I got home a little after 6:00 and fed the pets, and puttered on the computer til 7:00 when I Skyped the FWiB.

We talked til 8:00 when I had my Al-anon meeting. That was very small but good. M wasn't there. I hope she's OK.

Then I had a little to eat, and texted with the Kid about funeral arrangements. A depressing subject but now that Oldest Brother has entered hospice, pretty necessary. It looks as though we'll do a direct cremation with a service at the crematorium, followed by a two hour memorial at the funeral home. I hope that cousin Cliff will be able to do the service.

Went to the bedroom and played solitaire, then came out and fed the pets again. Time for bed pretty soon.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The house is done.

3. Good lunch.

4. The Kid.

5. Cousin Cliff.

6. My copy of One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish came.

We’re going on an egg hunt

So the last few days have been eventful so it’s time, again, for a general post.

So on Sunday I started watching The Residence. I saw a trailer for it on twitter about a month or so ago and I was instantly intrigued. It’s a murder mystery and someone has gotten killed at a large house while a party is going on downstairs. Which yeah, sounds like dozens of other murder mysteries, except this is no ordinary large house: it’s the white house.

I watched the first two episodes and, so far, it’s really great so far! I love the detective as she’s so quirky and has absolutely no respect for any of the guys trying to tell her what to do (or what not to do). The cast is also wild as there’s been a lot of people I’ve recognised (The FBI agent from Ant Man and Wandavision, Tilly from Star Trek Discovery, Jane Curtain from 3rd Rock from the sun, one of the guys from OG Charmed, hughJackman and Kylie Minogue! Oh and the guy that plays Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian is in it too.) I really love it and wanna watch more cause I wanna know what happened!

The rest of Sunday was kinda low energy but I did end up starting a game pass game, Planet Of Lana. It came to gamepass last year and I wanted to play it cause it looks so pretty but alas I got sidetracked. It really is so pretty though and there’s a cute lil guy called Mui who is like a lil black cat thing. It’s pretty good so far, though some parts are tricky.

I found out on insta that there’s gonna be an indie horror short film thing at a cinema in Birmingham (here’s the list) and I’m kinda tempted to check it out even though I dunno exactly where the cinema is and it’s on a library day. We’ll see if I do it (they’re also doing full showings of Twin Peaks which is kinda cool but they’re on Sundays)

There wasn’t gonna be any plans Monday, but then when I was looking at the tv guide I saw there was a film I’d wanted to see for awhile on. It was The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes and I’d heard of it cause there’s a section at Loch Ness (which resulted in a prop being lost to the loch only to be found again a few years back). And honestly? It was a wild ride. It had Christopher Lee as Mycroft an opening story mostly unconnected to the rest (with Sherlock implying to someone that he was gay and Watson was his lover), a finale at Loch Ness and a closing scene that was so sad. (It’s on Sky Arts again Saturday afternoon.j I’m so glad I spottted the listing, though also so sad when I looked up later that there was intended to be more scenes to it but they got cut.

Since money, finally, turned up I decided to go to sainsburys this morning to look for eggs. As I posted on insta I did find some, in sainsburys and Aldi, but there really weren’t many options and it was mainly more expensive eggs left. M and S’s food also didn’t have anything which was a shame as I wanted to try some of their hot cross buns. I did get a lil Lego Yoshi and the new radio times from sainsburys though.

(Also Pets at home had the cutest lil Guinea pigs they were so adorable😭)

I did manage to get a Lindt eggfor mum though as thanks for all the issues, though the box could easily have been half the size it was. We also had dominos, which was good though I’m sure the price has gone up since we last had some.

Also today Elder Scrolls Oblivion has been remastered and was out today! It’s on game pass too so I might try it sometime but it’s 120GB thst means I have to figure out a way to make space (damn xbox and memory card things being so small)

Also today the local cinema put up the Episode III showing times and it looks like it’s only from Friday-Sunday which is a bit annoying. It’s also annoying it’s only one showing, 3:45 which means I can get there on bus, but have to walk back if I go. I’ll see what the weather is like, but I know Saturday is out cause of Doctor Who.

Anyway! I think that’s everything but I’m probably missing something super obvious.

When 2020 was looming, I posted an entry about the media that had made a real impact on me in the 2010s. I had fun with this, but it's hard to narrow things down across an entire decade! Maybe I should start doing these media roundups more frequently? Every half-decade, perhaps?

Oh, hey, it's 2025.

In alphabetical order, here are ten canons from the last five years that I think I'm going to remember! Note that this is media I originally experienced between 2020 and 2024, rather than necessarily being media that was originally released in that period.

1. Celeste. One of my absolute favourite games. Great music, charming characters, satisfying gameplay. It's tough, but I rarely found it frustrating, and I was delighted to realise how much I'd improved when I went back to replay from the beginning. Playing Celeste is a lot like playing the piano, learning the right pattern and timing of button presses through repetition until you can run smoothly through a level. I'll often find myself replaying Celeste levels when I've got a little time and nothing else is grabbing me, in the same way I'll often take a moment to sit at the piano and play a few pieces I know by heart.

2. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. The relationship between these siblings is just so awful and intimate and fascinating; I can't get enough of it. I want to swim around in all this hideous codependency. When I first drafted this list at the start of the year, I noted, There's a chance I'm being too hasty with this one; I discovered it right before 2024 ended, so I haven't had time to be sure it's going to be a lasting interest. But, having had my mind obliterated by the latest chapter, I can now say with confidence that I am never going to stop thinking about this horrible game.

3. Lost. What an experience! I love it when characters are stranded together and forced to bond under high pressure, and this is an absolutely stellar example. Went in some wild directions, too; I said 'what the fuck' so many times while watching this show. Jack Shephard is a wreck of a man in a way that I find fascinating.

4. Omori. This game fucked me up. A lot of it is fun and charming! And then there are the parts that severely messed with my head. Two separate aspects gave me trouble sleeping. Some really interesting uses of gameplay, including one of the best-executed plot reveals I've ever seen.

5. Person of Interest. In a lot of case-of-the-week shows, the case itself is the least interesting part for me. In Person of Interest, I found the individual weekly cases absolutely gripping. The fact that the murders they're investigating haven't happened yet gives each case a living main character, usually the would-be victim, which makes them so much more fun to watch. I really enjoy Reese as a character, too.

6. Persona 5. I picked up Persona 5 in lockdown, when it was heavily discounted. I'd heard good things about the Persona series, but I'd always been intimidated by how long and complicated the games sounded. Still, it was 2020, and I wasn't able to leave the house, so it seemed like the right time for a hundred-hour RPG. It was an incredible decision. What a stylish, fun game! What great kids! I played it non-stop for a month and a half and had an absolute blast.

7. Persona 4. I was a little concerned about going back to Persona 4 after playing 5. I'd loved Persona 5 so much; what if the previous game was a disappointment? But I ended up loving Persona 4 just as passionately, largely because of Yosuke; he's a good-hearted but slightly shitty disaster of a teenage boy who's helplessly in love with the protagonist, and I find him endlessly endearing.

8. Severance. I've always been compelled by stories about weird things happening to people's memories, and by stories about people developing intense relationships while isolated together, so Severance is essentially the perfect canon for me. By a long way, it's the most gripping show I've ever watched. I'm so nervous when I sit down for a new episode; I never know what to expect!

9. Taskmaster. What a show. It makes me laugh like nothing else. The way it keeps a single set of contestants for each series adds a lot to the experience; you really get to know the contestants and their approaches to these ridiculous tasks over the course of a series. The New Zealand and Australian versions are just as great to watch; Greg Davies remains an unparalleled Taskmaster, but, if I'm honest, Paul Williams is my favourite assistant.

Wait, that's only nine! Okay, I'm going to add a tenth, but this is definitely cheating:

10. Death Note. I absolutely did not first experience Death Note between 2020 and 2024; I've enjoyed it since 2008! But I feel it sort of fits in my 'canons of the last five years' post because I got back into it in 2023 in a way I'd never been into it before. I watched the stage musical, absolutely lost my mind and spent months thinking about nothing but Light Yagami. Let's say the tenth canon here is Death Note: The Musical.

Honourable mention to The Quarry for the burst of intense ficwriting it inspired in me! I wasn't that drawn in by the canon itself, but the potential in Travis and Laura's relationship really grabbed me by the throat.

EDIT: WAIT, I just thought of a legitimate number ten!

10-2: Die Hard. We were locked down for Christmas in 2020, and I was sorry that I couldn't visit my family, but the upside was that I joined in my housemates' Christmas tradition of watching Die Hard. This film was such a delightful surprise for me! I went in expecting a badass, stoic action hero; I got a desperate, terrified mess. I found John McClane's suffering so compelling. What a blast.

Unexpectedly staying another night

Got up latish, got phone calls from the hospice people, Oldest Brother officially started hospice today and I had some decisions to make. I hope I chose well.

Showered and dressed, and we went out to run errands. Started by lunch at an Indian restaurant, got the lamb curry lunch special and a mango lassi.

Then we went to Trader Joes and did major shopping. Then we took the bus to Stop and Shop and did more major shopping.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick asked me to stay another night so we can start early tomorrow, and get the Very Last Boxes out of the house and to the storage unit with the driving help of zer friend Liz G. And I agreed, so I'm staying tonight.

Got back to zer place from Stop and Shop, stopping at Starbucks on the way, and heard from RK that he was available to help tonight getting stuff from the house that isn't going into the storage unit. We took his car over, and got the stuff back here. One big box broke open on it's way in, but RK picked it up.

Then we went out to California Pizza Kitchen and got take out. I got the Wild Mushroom pizza. WE went to RK's place, and after we ate we played a game of Dominion. RK won, I lost rather badly, but I am beginning to understand how the game works.

Then he drove us back here, and soon it will be bed time.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB, even though we didn't get to Skype.

2. Oldest Brother in hospice care.

3. Dried apple slices.

4. The Kid has a job interview.

5. RK.

6. Friends.

Another Full Opera Review

[personal profile] dandylover1
Hello, Dear Readers. Tonight, I listened to the 1929-30 (two dates are given in two different videos) Il Barbiere Di Siviglia with Riccardo Stracciari, Mercedes Capsir, Dino Borgioli, Salvatore Baccaloni, and Vincenzo Bettoni.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbuDjd65AyI

I was quite familiar with Borgioli, though I hadn't heard him in a full opera prior to this. I heard and enjoyed Baccaloni in Don Pasquale and L'Elisir d'Amore, and was pleasantly surprised to find him here. I heard a few recordings of Stracciari, so he was not wholely unknown to me, but the others were new. Since I am still learning Italian, I read the English libretto before each part so that I could follow the plot.

https://www.opera-arias.com/rossini/il-barbiere-di-siviglia/libretto/english/

I enjoyed the story and found it to be quite humorous. The singing and acting were also good. That said, I read that the role of Rosina was originally written for a contralto. I would have loved to have heard that. Did any ever sing it? Also, I know there is a different opera with the same name by Paisiello. I found several modern recordings of it, but do any older ones exist? Does anyone know the other full opera that Borgioli recorded? Its name escapes me at the moment.

Finally, if anyone here is a Wikipedia editor, they missed two recordings, this one and the one from 1918 with Fernando de Lucia.

About time

So finally Rocket is getting neutered. Why did I wait so long? If I'm honest, I still see him as the apartment complex's cat not mine. I didn't want him really, especially when he first came and I was still learning to walk again. But he is a beautiful cat, not just pretty but so very sweet. His only fault is, is he prefers to be outside and doesn't want to use litter (he wants out)

He did fine and he's staying overnight by my request because he is FIV+. They called me to say he's fine and they didn't pull his teeth because they weren't loose (I knew that but they are broken and THEY were the ones to put it out there in the first place) They wanted me to okay expensive antibiotics because of his FIV and I said yes. I'll get him tomorrow night. I wanted a good 36 hours of him being indoors and not too mobile so the surgical site can heal up

We had two students give presentations today that were good. One was using oyster mushrooms to substitute brewer's yeast to make alcohol based on a paper where it was done with wine. It worked better with wine but he did mix yeast and shroom and it was a nice sour beer (yes there was a taste testing)

It's music monday and we're working through the alphabet. I'm sticking with songs from the last 5 years but you can rec whatever you'd like. We're up to C

I'm realizing I listen to Taylor Swift more than I think )

Catching up on various shows

selenak: (Demerzel and Terminus)
[personal profile] selenak
Daredevil Reborn: overall, good finale. I'm not shipping anyone on this show (or its predecessor), but I was amused, given that Luke Cage managed to make "coffee" a synonym for sex back in the Netflix day for all the Marvel shows, that Frank expressed the wish for coffee with both Matt and Karen. (Not at the same time.) On a more serious note, the finale evidently went for an Empire Strikes Back vibe in that spoilery stuff happens )

Wheel of Time S3 finale: speaking of Empire Strikes Back vibes... Though in this case just in one plot line. Okay, two, technically. (The second one being Team Elayne, Matt, Min and Nyneave not gaining what they wanted to, but what Nynayve did get was so important that I hesitate to equate this with the goings on at the White Tower.) This, too, is based on a book series written many years ago, and was shot way back when yours truly hoped the world would be less insane in 2025 than it actually is, but can't help but feel extremely on point with its spoiilery stuff )

Doctor Who ?.02: amusingly weird, technically impressive, everyone looks gorgeous in their costumes. But Fourth Wall Breaking stories are not really my thing, and so I can't say I loved it.

Happy Easter

[personal profile] silver_chipmunk
And the last day of Passover too.

Slept late and got up around 12:00. Had breakfast and coffee, showered, washed my hair, dressed, and left to see Oldest Brother.

Stayed for about an hour. He was pretty good, about the same.

Then I came over to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's place. We did some chores, then ordered dinner and watched Will Trent. Dinner was pernil and beans and rice.

We watched Will Trent for several hours, at 8:30 I called Middle Brother. He was out at Belmont Lake State Park yestrday and had a good time.

We went back to watching Will Trent, and have now finally caught up to the current episodes. We'll watch Tuesday's episode Thursday.

I Skyped the FWiB from my phone after Will Trent.

I'm spending the night here again.

I texted John and The Kid, no answers from either yet. Laurie texted me to wish me Happy Easter.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Good TV.

3. Middle Brother well.

4. Oldest Brother holding his own.

5. Good dinner.

6. Family.

Writerly Ways

cornerofmadness: Angel hugging his pig amidst rubble (Default)
[personal profile] cornerofmadness
To my friends who celebrate Happy Easter

I had a thing planned but I had a critical low sugar event (on a day where I ate chocolate eggs, peeps and had couscous for dinner, why?) and then trying to get my sugar up I aspirated some food into my lungs. I feel like crap so here have this question instead.

How do you handle blurbs? Especially my indie author folk? I'm reading Under This Red Rock by Mindy McGinnis and the point of view character is either mentally ill and hearing voices, like real people, (like her brother and father) or something else is going on. Regardless, the blurb spoils the fact her would-be girlfriend is murdered and the character can't be sure that she is innocent of the crime and I'm like way to totally take away ALL the tension of multiple scenes while we're working up to where did Mila go, did she ghost Neely after their one night together? etc. If you want to have a tense, teasing blurb, murder is a way to do it but wouldn't something like 'after the night of the bonfire that leaves one of them dead' be better? It leaves the tension in the story instead of the reader ticking off time until this character dies (and there are multiple people working at this cavern so it could have been any of them)

I'm not sure I have wisdom as to writing blurbs but I know that wasn't the way to do it (btw this is a NY bestselling author and a biggish publishing house and no I wasn't brave enough to ask her about the blurb when I was talking to her last weekend)

Don’t make me laugh

shadowhive: (Qimir Sabers)
[personal profile] shadowhive
The past few days have been semi less stressful than before, but mostly because it’s a bank holiday so nothing can really be done (so money still isn’t in and I don’t expect it to be until Tuesday at the earliest which I’m trying not to be frustrated about)

The main source of stress was yesterday morning cause my glasses have gone completely awol. I honestly have no idea where they are. The problem is I can’t remember if I took them off downstairs Friday night before bed (and so they’re somewhere down here) or if I took them up and they’re in my room. I had thought it was the latter but they’re not under the pillows or either side of the bed so I’m at a loss. (Mum looked too and had no luck either.) the only good thing is that they’re in the house somewhere it’s just… where. (I just hope Naryu hasn’t hid them she did that with mums before but not for awhile)

Thankfully mum knew where my old pair was but… they’re an old pair. They’re good enough that I can see but when I was on ESO last night I couldn’t read half of the in game text which is irritating (Especially when I was gonna get back to Stranger Things this week and I just know there’ll be subtitles.) If it comes down to it I might have to contact my opticians for my prescription and sort a pair out but… ugh.

Anyway there’s also been Star Wars celebration but I’ve not been able to watch or properly able to catch up with the official streams. However there’s been some good things:

*The Mandalorian and Grogu is coming out next year (the title is so clunky though) and there’s gonna be Zeb from Rebels, a fight on an AT-AT and Sigourney Weaver is gonna be a New Republic commander and pilot
*There’s gonna be a new film in two years called Star Wars Starfighter, not much info other than it has Ryan Gosling and it’s set a few years after IX
*Other films are in development but I’ll believe them when there’s actual details
*The Hasbro panel announced new figures but not too many. There’s Dash Rendar (it still feels odd there’s a sudden big Shadows Of The Empire push) and stuff from Jedi Survivor including a two pack with Turgle and Cal (though his alternate head is…) the coolest looking thing is a furry bantha! (Still no Qimir figure though)
*Hayden and Manny were there and both got massive amounts of love which is so deserved
*The animation panel announced a new series, Maul Shadow Lord. A Darth Maul series was not on my bingo card but it does sound cool, though it’s another new Rise of the empire era thing.
*Theres a new Clone Wars era turn based strategy game called Zero Company which looks pretty cool
*Ahsoka season 2 is filming soon (damn why so long)but I love the idea of a Thrawn/Ackbar face off(and ahhh Loth kittens!)
*Visions was the only panelI saw and that’s coming in Octoberand the concept art looks so cool (and the was a clip of someone that’s very friend shape. The new volume has sequels to volume 1 stuff so I’ll have to rewatch them (and one is getting a limited series too)
*The next Fortnite season is confirmed to be a five week Star Wars one with Palpatine, Mace Windu, Poe, Phasma and Darth Jar Jar coming (at least) which is a crazy line up.I’m surprised they didn’t announce a Cassian cause surely there is one

I think that’s all the big announcements (and obviously Andor is coming this week and Tales Of The Underworld Star Wars day.)

Despite not fully being in the hype this time it has made me wanna get back to Star Wars stuff. I still have a massive pile of Star Wars books to get round to so I might actually pick one to read after the current books. (And even if not there’s a bunch of graphic novels that will be easier to check out instead.) There’s also Visions volume 2 and the other Tales Of The Empire stuff to watch so I might watch them (and Young Jedi Adventures and Bad Batch, fuck I’m so far behind). And the black series figures have made me wanna get back on Jedi Survivor which I might do this week if I’m not too tired.

But ahhhh Star Wars!

But of course last night was one of my other main loves, aka a new Doctor Who ep so thoughts on Lux under the cut.

Today’s plan! Start The zresidence, have another root around for my glasses, watch Shoto’s spooky stream, Grace and then a Wendigoon vid (and maybe more who knows?) I also wanna see if fic brain will work and read the Stranger Things comic that came the other week but I was too stressed to read.

Historical Operas

[personal profile] dandylover1
Hello, Dear Readers. This entry has been almost a week in the making, as I have been working to compile it and also making new discoveries as I did so! Today, I have a real treat for all of you. This is a huge list of full operas from 1901 to 1956, complete with links to most. Originally, I was just going to include the few operas that I had downloaded onto my computer. Then, I found a link with many listed, which gave me a lot more work to do, including extracting the names, years, and record companies of the operas from the article, searching for them on Youtube. and copying the titles exactly as they appeared there so that, if the links don't work, you could find them. Despite my own preference for bel canto and lighter operas, I have included all sorts of performances for you to enjoy, covering evrything from Mozart to verismo. While most are Italian, some are in French, German, and even English!

Still the best name for a con, still tacked onto a tiny con in Athens that fights in a basketball court. Mostly my friends are running it (trying to rope me in but right now I'm quoting my health issues as why not but I will look for vendors for them).

Speaking of health issues, I could hardly move today, I'm so exhausted. I got there an hour later than planned but it worked out. I wanted to enter the raffles and this year...not a lot there that I was interested in anyhow. I didn't win anything this year (last year I won three things so it balances) and one of my friends said, 'watch me win the thing I didn't want but accidentally dropped my ticket into' And she did. She was going to give it to me (a merman illustration) but someone else wanted it more than me so I gave it to him. Karma owes me (and I don't mean the storm it served up, more on that later)

I didn't get to any of the talks because I knew I would never be able to get to them and manage to stay long enough to get to the raffle (in the future I will have to plan my one-day con trips well if I can't get my energy back). I did however get some fun stuff at the vendors.

I picked up A Shade of Winter from Henlo Press a paranormal mystery (some fool forgot her cheaters today. Not mentioning any names....) I've got the first book in several of their series already... which led me to a conclusion (more on that later)

I picked up a couple's earring set of Ozzie and Fizzarolli from Helluva Boss from Unicorn Massacres Designs. It's a cute set. I've bought from them before (artist is trans with a lot of trans rights stuff if you want to take a look).

From Dany Cat Designs I got some soap for me and for gifts. I still have one bar left over from last year. She didn't have any of the dice soap with her this year. I picked up Hades for myself along with Make It So

I said NO more wall art so naturally I bought two postcard sized bits of art from Cocomomo Art because her Hazbin stuff is probably the best I've seen for sale in the past several cons. She also recced a hopepunk queer anime, Promare. I need to find it.

Speaking of wall art, I should have walked past Amanda Scharf Illustration but her water colors were too damn pretty. Did I need a water color of Angel Dust? No. Do I now own one? What do you think? She had so many colors too. If the purple had only been a little richer....I went with dark blue.

There is an artist I get earrings from every con (and other vendors probably hate her) because she sells them for 3$ a pop vs what everyone else does (but I'm also betting she just buys the charms in bulk somewhere) I need to find out if some of my friends wear bigger earrings. Wish [personal profile] evil_little_dog wore earrings because she'd love half of these and sadly the artist doesn't do pins.

I did get some birthday/holiday gifts too. I'll see several of these vendors again in a few weeks at Final Boss con on my university. There was one person selling ITA bags which I need desperately for all my pins but honestly these looked like grocery bags for the same price as much more intricately done backpack styles so I skipped it (and I can make the banners for the pins myself if I take a minute to do it) I was glad I went. Got a few hugs from friends. Yeah I'm not a hugger but on the other hand it's nice to have people who are genuinely happy to see me.

I left the con and went to Kroger for cheese (this one has the fancy cheeses) All was well. I got my cheeses and some absolutely yummy olives that I'm sorry I didn't buy more of. Came out 15 minutes later and it looked cloudy. Five minutes later as I'm getting my Tim Horton's coffee rocket fuel to drive home on, it's even darker. By the time I go 2 miles to Avalanche pizza to pick up my death in a box (otherwise known as the skeletonwitch) it's BLACK. The manager is telling the staff to tell patrons the deliveries will be delayed because of the incoming storm.

I grab my pizza and beat feet. I don't get 5 miles out of town before it let loose. The wind was first, so strong I was literally knocked off the road three times. Then the rain came so hard I thought 'got to stop at the rest stop just up the road and ride this out.' It was raining SO hard I couldn't see the rest stop and missed it. I inched another mile down the highway to the red light where I know there is a gas station. Waited it out there for about 15 minutes. Thankfully my ebook held out because some one forgot to charge it (not mentioning any names) and it was down to 7%.

Luckily after that it was light rain or none all the way home. I'm glad I went. I wish I had energy that 2 hours didn't all but kill me. So that decision I came to at the con...for some damn reason there are a half dozen things I want to do on the 3rd (all in vastly different directions) Ohioana Book festival in Columbus (very late this year), the Gallipolis street steampunk festival, free comic book day, heartwoods mental health festival (in a Chillicothe park), a psychic fair in Logan, the mother's day glass sale in the Hocking Hills.

I decided not to go to the Book festival. My friend isn't going to be there. I haven't read 90% of the books I bought there last year (I'm working on 2 now).I need a new book like I need slapped. Worse, they'll be signed so I won't want to part with them. That doesn't help my space issue. I think I'm better off either doing the steampunk/comic book thing (they're in the same direction) or the glass/mental health fair (also in the same (but different) direction). Decisions Decisions.

Came home and started to watch the newly dropped Gaslight District pilot. Been looking forward to this. I haven't watched more than a few minutes (too tired) and I'm not sure I like the animation style but I'll need to see more.

Al-anon and stuff

Got up and went to my Al-anon meeting by bus after having breakfast and coffee, and showering. The meeting was smaller than usual but good. I chaired again.

Got a ride to the diner and had a bagel with cream cheese and lox, and iced coffee. Got a ride home from L, very nice.

Got here in time to see the last two seconds of the credits of the Starsky and Hutch episode. Oh well. Had fun at the chat, though. I put in a Shipt order while we were chatting,

We chatted til about 5:30. Then I killed time puttering on the computer, until 7:00 when I Skyped the FWiB. We talked til 8:30.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick texted right when we got off and we discussed tomorrow. I'm going to go see Oldest Brother, then decide if I'm going over to zer or not.

After that I got something for dinner, and went into the bedroom to play solitaire.

Did that til pet feeding time, then I fed the pets and here I am.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. Beautiful weather.

4. The Starsky and Hutch fandom.

5. Relaxing day.

6. Shipt.

Got phone calls this morning from the hospice guy. The long and short is that the hospice will not cover the PEG feeding but the nirsing home itself will continue to do so. So they need some additional paperwork which is pretty much just a confirmation from the nursing home, the hospice care will start Monday or Tuesday.

I also spoke to Robyn about the funeral planning. This will be expensive but I should be able to afford it. I'm figuring a direct cremation, and a memorial in the funeral home some time following.

At about 4:45 Sue and Danny arrived. They picked me and [personal profile] mashfanficchick up and we went to the nursing home. We visited for about an hour and a half I think.

Then we went to Astoria and met up with the Kid and her boyfriend at a restaurant called Queens Room. We had dinner, and I had a glass of wine. It was lovely, we had a very good time.

After dinner we all went to Martha's Country Kitchen for dessert. There was too long a wait for a table, so we got our pastries to go and went to Ditmar Park to look at the Manhattan skyline. We ate our dessert on a bench. Then we said good bye to the Kid and her boyfriend, and Danny drove me and [personal profile] mashfanficchick to zer place where I picked up my stuff, and they drove me home.

I Skyped the FWiB, after feeding the pets.

Then I started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Robyn's help.

3. My cousins.

4. The Kid.

5. Good dinner.

6. Things worked out with the hospice.

Since no one wants to hear about the depression and crap and my day was boring. that said I DO hope taking iron will fix some of this for me. I am getting tired out by going shopping. I don't want to go on like this if I can do something about it. I feel 90 not 50something

And let me say, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to [personal profile] lordgloria Hope it was a good one.

But I did write today and I'm happy with this story. It's silly and hopefully fun and I hope you enjoy it if you read it.

It's absolutely horrible fanfiction time!

If anyone prefers to read on AO3, I should mention that you won't currently find this on my AO3 account, because I've posted it anonymously for now; it's over here.

I've chosen to post this anonymously at first because, uh, I was recently interviewed about fanfiction for a newspaper article. I don't know whether I'll actually end up getting mentioned in the final article, but, if I am, I don't want unsuspecting newspaper readers to wander over to my AO3 account and discover this as the most recent fic on it; it's a little intense!

Particularly sharp-eyed readers may note that I've given the first warden a gun, when only the second warden had one in canon. This is because I can do what I want and you can't stop me.

Snowy day

Josette on a snowy day

Josette on a snowy day

These are just a couple of pictures I took of Josette in January on a snow day. She’s wearing a mixture of very old and very new things. The old include a wig originally intended for her lover, Bryony; some bloomers from Milky Ange; a shirt from Nine9 Style; and her original hosiery; the new include the beanie with chains, the watch, and her blue eyes, which were included in the box from Dollmore with Aubrey.

I haven’t been able to figure out exactly what kind of eyes they are, but I love how brightly they glow. I thought they might be resin eyes, but the pupils look almost as though they are screen-printed when you look closely. I did buy some resin eyes from Dollmore more recently, and they don’t glow quite like these do.

In other news, I have a few doll profiles up and linked to my sticky post now, but I have a ways to go. It’s progress, though.
