bunnyboo: A portrait of Jane Austen (austen)

I finished the first volume!

I wonder if Emma's dislike of Jane Fairfax is less about her reserved nature and possible infatuation with a married man, and more about the similarities between her and Harriet Smith. They're both young women of little consequence, possessing beauty, living on the kindness of others, but Jane is more independent, less pliable and controllable. She's made her own way in life (somewhat) and has a clearer vision for her future than Harriet. She's also less naïve and less open.

...but I may be overthinking this.
