There is the idea that the Ring chooses its owner, but I prefer the interpretation that you can resist it even if it’s incredibly difficult or nearly impossible. Choices are everything.
This is always one of the most interesting things about this series to me - the ring chooses and influences it's holders (I hesitate to call them owners, because that implies a level of control that just isn't there), but it also influeces the people around them, and I find some of the contrasts in terms of who resists the ring and how, and in turn what that says about them by comparison to those who succumb, quite fascinating.
